I had a little overcoat5/12/2023 This story was adapted from a Yiddish folk song from Taback’s childhood called “I Had a Little Overcoat.” The lyrics and the music can also be found on the last page of the book. The moral of the story is that “you can always make something out of nothing.” He turns his loss into creating a story about his little overcoat. One day the button is lost and then he is left with nothing. The vest becomes a scarf, the scarf becomes necktie, the necktie becomes a handkerchief, and the handkerchief finally ends up as a small button. The story continues in the same way, each time with Joseph making a new item of clothing which gets smaller and smaller. It, too, became old and worn so he makes a vest out of it. He wore it often and eventually it became old and worn but instead of throwing it away, he makes a jacket out of it. Joseph had a little striped overcoat that he liked so much.
